An overview of 30 years of Kant interpretations

Patricia Kitcher's collection of "Critical Essays" comprises twelve texts on Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" (1st edn. 1781, 2nd edn. 1787) which are written by ten out-standing Kant scholars. The texts are, without exception, reprints of articles and sections (taken from monographs) that have appeared before (between 1964 and 1990). They provide an accessible overview of studies of Kant's First Critique and of influential commentators of Kant (from UK&USA), respectively. - The topics covered include clarificatory and critical analyses of: some of the basic concepts of the Critique ("a priori", "analytic", "synthetic", "necessity"), Kant's (alledged) nativism, his philosophy of mathematics, his concept of a "Cognitive Self" (Pat. Kitcher), the Transcendental Deduction as a regressive argument (an interpretation proposed by Karl Ameriks), Kant's treatment of causality, the hoary question of the nature of Kant's transcendental Idealism (exemplified by portions from two classics: Sir Peter Strawson's "The Bounds of Sense", 1966, and Henry Allison's "Kant's Transcendental Idealism", 1983), Kant's philosophy of science, his contribution to the free will problem (defended by Allen Wood), and his critique of theism. - The collection is "intended to help students read the Critique of Pure Reason with a greater understanding of its central themes and arguments, and with some important lines of criticism of those themes and arguments." (p. xvii) The collection will be valuable for advanced students (to whom I would certainly recommend this book), since the texts are no introductions, nor can they compete with a commentary. They scrutinize Kant's presuppositions and arguments and thereby open the reader's way to a more profound understanding of Kant's critical enterprise. So, those essays require more efforts from their readers than e.g. an introduction does. Readers who are going to work for the first time through the Critique should consult Sebastian Gardner's "Kant and the Critique of Pure Reason" (Routledge Philosophy Guide Book, 1999) additionally.
